Cultural Legacy Committee

The Moscow City Cultural Legacy Committee was founded more than half a century ago, and is currently a specially authorized state body responsible for the protection of historical and cultural monuments in Moscow City, which performs its functions on the territories administered by the Moscow Government and ensures the development and implementation of the city’s policy in the field of immovable cultural legacy.

The key activities of Moskomnasledie:

• detection and accounting of historical and cultural monuments;
• execution of historical and cultural expertise;
• arrangement of state protection of a facility;
• ensuring preservation of archeology objects and archeological research;
• arrangement of the use of immovable cultural legacy;
• control over the preservation and use of historical and cultural monuments, ancient mansions, historical necropolis, the monuments of garden and park art, landscape architecture, works of monumental sculpture, valuable interior painting;
• coordination and monitoring of repair and restoration works;
• implementation — in cooperation with the executive authority of Moscow City authorized to operate in the field of architecture and city planning-of a single policy in the process of city planning activities on the territory of Moscow City;
• participation in the development of laws of Moscow City and the Russian Federation pertaining to the issues of protection and use of historical and cultural monuments;
• arrangement and holding of events related to the popularization of historical and cultural legacy of Moscow City, including those of international nature.

Moskomnasledie controls over 6 thd. of the objects of Moscow’s cultural legacy. On annual basis Moskomnasledie carries out the restoration works of over than 100 objects.

The territory of Moscow City accommodates three objects included in the UNESCO World Natural and Cultural Heritage List — the Moscow Kremlin, the Church of Ascension in Kolomenskoe, the ensemble of the Novodevichiy Convent.

Presently Moskomnasledie has established steady partner relations with the governmental organizations operating in the field of protection of the national legacy of Berlin, Brussels, Genoa, Krakow, Budapest and Vienna.
