Districts. Aeroport, Begovoy, Beskudnikovsky, Dmitrovsky, Golovinsky, Khovrino, Khoroshyovsky, Koptevo, Levoberezhny, Molzhaninovsky, Savyolovsky, Sokol, Timiryazevsky, Vostochnoye Degunino, Voykovsky, Zapadnoye Degunino — 16 districts.
Area. 109.9 square kilometers (around 10% of the total area of Moscow).
Population. approx. 1200,000 people (11 percent of the total population of Moscow).
Manufacturing. The Northern Administrative Okrug’s economy is made up of over 1,000 large and medium-sized enterprises, as well as nearly 18,000 small businesses. The manufacturing sector is represented by nearly all industrial fields: engineering, light industry, food production, jewellery design, construction materials, and printing. The okrug has accumulated Moscow’s leading aviation industry enterprises and related research institutions: the Zhukovsky Air Force Engineering Academy; the Dementyev Moscow Aviation Plant; the Rumyantsev Moscow Aviation Plant; the Ilyushin, Yakovlev, Mikoyan, and Sukhoi design offices; and Aeroproject. The key institutions driving the administrative okrug’s scientific and technological progress include Research Automobile and Engine Institute (NAMI), Research Automobile and Tractor Institute (NATI), the Research Institute for Thermal Processes, Clock and Medical Industry, the Atommash Research Institute, and the High Temperatures Institute, among a great number of other scientific and research institutions.
Consumer market and services. Over 100 new enterprises launched their operations in the Northern Administrative Okrug over the past three years, including new retail stores, restaurants, and public service facilities. Three food discounters were opened: two Kopeyka outlets (one in Vostochnoye Degunino, and the other in Dmitrovsky districts) and a Narodny Magazin (in Levoberezhny). Moreover, four non-food retail stores were launched: a Pyaty Sezon (Begovoy), an Eldorado (Levoberezhny), a J footwear chain store, and a Red Cube (Sokol) gift shop.
Also located here is a world-renowned ophthalmology and eye microsurgery research centre, as well as major medical centres: the traumatic surgery and orthopedics centre, and the Transportation Ministry’s and the Interior Ministry’s central clinical hospitals.
Arts and sports. The okrug is home to the Timiryazev Moscow Argicultural Academy (1865) — one of the capital’s oldest higher-education institutions, Moscow Aviation Institute (MAI), Moscow Civil Aviation Engineering Institute (MIIGA), Moscow State Automobile and Road Technical University (MADI), State Circus and Performing Arts School, Stroganov Moscow State University of Arts and Industry, Moscow State University of Food Production, Interior Ministry Academy, Border Guard Troops Academy, and the Finance Academy under the Government of the Russian Federation, among many others.
The capital’s Northern okrug features the world’s only professional gypsy theatre, the Moscow Romen Theatre, as well as the Pokrovsky Moscow State Academic Chamber Music Theatre. Furthermore, a famous art colony has existed in the Sokol district since the 1930s.
Athletes and sports fans are welcome at the Ice Hockey Arena in Khodynskoye Pole, the Krylya Sovetov Arena, the CSKA Sports Complex, and the Dinamo and Yunye Pionery stadiums.
