North-Western Administrative Okrug

Districts: Kurkino, Mitino, Pokrovskoye-Streshnevo, Severnoye Tushino, Strogino, Khoroshyovo-Mnevniki, Shukino, Yuzhnoye Tushino — 8 districts.
Area: 106.7 square kilometers (11% of the total area of Moscow).
Population: 1,108.2m people (12.4% of the total population of Moscow).
Manufacturing. The administrative okrug’s economy sector is formed by 30 major industrial enterprises, as well as 15,000 small and medium businesses. Among the largest companies in the okrug are Chernyshev Moscow Mechanical Engineering Enterprise, Tushino Mechanical Engineering Plant, and Molniya Research and Industrial Corporation, where the first Russian reusable manned space vehicle Buran Orbiter was created.
The North-Western Administrative Okrug has significant scientific potential, primarily in the healthcare sector. The most prominent medical centers, known both in Russia and abroad, are located here: the Gamaleya Scientific Research Institute of Epidemiology and Microbiology, Ivanovsky State Research Institute of Virusology of the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences, Transplantology and Artificial Organs Research Institute, Neurology Research Institute, State Research Institute of Biological Instrument Engineering, Institute of Molecular Genetics of the Russian Science Academy, and the Institute of Biophysics, to name just a few.
Currently the okrug is home to more than 50 research institutes and design instates, including such major ones as the Scientific Research Institute of Astrophysics, Toropov State Engineering Design Bureau Vympel, Scientific and Research Institute of Motor Transport, All-Russian Scientific Research Institute for Road Making and Construction Machinery (Vniistroydormash), Bochvar All-Russian Scientific Research Institute for Inorganic Materials, Pamfilov Academy of Municipal services, and the leading Russian Research Center Kurchatov Institute.
Consumer market and services. Public services have been actively developing in the North-Western Administrative Okrug over the last several years. In 2008, the total number of public service companies reached 585. Furthermore, the okrug is currently developing multiservice chains (convenience stores) that provide 3 to 15 different types of services all in one location.
The development of public services is characterized by great attention to social aspects. A total of 56 licensed social public service enterprises work in the okrug and provide services to the population at reduced prices.
Arts and sports. More than 50 cultural, artistic and sports facilities are located in the North-Western Administrative Okrug, including several prominent universities: the Mendeleev University of Chemical Technology of Russia; the Russian State Academy of Slavic Culture; and the Schnittke Moscow State Institute of Music. The Youth music school No.17 was one of the first schools in Moscow to be granted a UNESCO certificate.
A large number of records is closely connected with the Tushino Air Club, which was also granted an honorary status by the National Russian Air Club.
The North-Western Administrative Okrug is famous in Moscow for its recreational parks, such as Severnoye Tushino, Porkovskoye-Streshnevo, and Serebryany Bor, with its memorial and recreation area Lemeshev.
