South-Eastern Administrative Okrug

Year established: 1991

Districts: Kapotnya, Kuzminki, Lefortovo, Lyublino, Maryino, Nekrasovka, Nizhegorodsky, Pechatniki, Ryazansky, Tekstilshchiki, Vykhino-Zhulebino, and Yuzhnoportovy — 12 districts.

Area: 117.56 square kilometres (11%  of the total area of Moscow).

Population: 1,149,000 people (11% of the total population of Moscow).

Manufacturing. The South-Eastern Administrative Okrug is one of the largest industrial regions of the capital city, with 98 industrial enterprises operating there, including such national-scale giants as the automaker Moskvitch, the Serp i Molot metallurgical plant, the Krasny Proletary plant, the Lyublino casting and mechanical and the Moscow tyre plants, Moskabelment, Moskovsky Podshipnik, the Khromotograf electrical engineering plant, the Kapotnya oil processing plant, the Karacharovsky Mechanics Factory, and Mikoms.

The okrug, with its 80 scientific and design organizations, boasts great scientific and technical potential.

There are also 15,100 small and medium-sized businesses operating in the okrug. An Entrepreneurial Council was created to consolidate efforts and coordinate the activities of small and medium-sized businesses in social and economic projects’ development, analysis, and investment.

Consumer market and services. The South-Eastern Administrative Okrug is home to two large multifunctional complexes, the shopping complexes DZ and Mercado, as well as retail chains The Seventh Continent, Kopeyka-Moscow, Pyaterochka, Avoska, Utkonos, and Stok-Tsentr. There are also over 80 food and public service organizations in the okrug.

In an effort to develop interregional cooperation, in line with an approved schedule and in active cooperation with Mosregiontorg, weekend fairs are held in the okrug’s districts with the participation of producers from the Moscow, Ryazan, Tambov, Lipetsk, Nizhny Novgorod, Tula, Oryol, Voronezh, and several other regions across Russia. A total of 108 healthcare institutions are in operation in the okrug.

Arts and sports. The  South-Eastern Administrative Okrug’s education sector is made up of 450 institutions, and its cultural sector of 86 institutions, including two exhibition halls, six recreational parks, as well as the Laboratoria and the Chikhachyov theatres, the Paustovsky Moscow Literary Museum , and a music pedagogical college.

Over 500 various fitness and sports facilities in the South-Eastern Administrative Okrug receive over 100,000 customers daily. The unique sports complexes Moskvitch, Energia, GAU, Kometa, Trud, and Spartak, as well as the skating rink in Maryino, are especially popular. Students of the okrug’s sports schools regularly become players on city and even national sports teams.

Grandfather Frost’s (Russian equivalent of Santa Claus) residence is also found in the South-Eastern Administrative Okrug. The okrug was named Fountain Okrug in 2008.
