South-Western Administrative Okrug
Year established: 1991
Districts: Akademichesky, Gagarinsky, Zyuzino, Konkovo, Kotlovka, Lomonosovsky, Obruchevsky, Severnoye Butovo, Tyoply Stan, Cheryomushki, Yuzhnoye Butovo and Yasenevo - 12 districts.
Area: 111.7 square kilometers (10.3% of Moscow’s total area).
Population: 1,222,000 people (roughly 12% of Moscow’s total population).
Manufacturing: The okrug is home to numerous large and small-sized governmental and private companies, providing an essential input not only for the city, but also for Russia in general. Among them, a special mention should be made of the automation and instrument-making research and production association which takes orders for defense and space projects, Moscow Special Alloys Processing Plant, and the renowned Cheryomushki Confectionery and Baking Factory. The okrug accommodates 18,000 small and medium-sized companies, and the number is gradually increasing.
The okrug also hosts the Presidium of the Russian Academy of Sciences and around 160 academic institutions, including 71 institutes of the Russian Academy of Sciences as well as famous higher educational institutions and leading research and production companies: Peoples’ Friendship University of Russia, Russian State Medical University (RSMU), Ordzhonikidze Russian State Geological Exploration Institute, Law Institute of the Ministry of Interior of Russia, and Gubkin Russian State University of Oil and Gas.
The okrug boasts numerous research and production companies, including Toriy Scientific and Production Enterprise, Stelmakh Polyus Research and Development Institute, Pilyugin Automation and Instrumentation Scientific Production Center, VNIINS (All-Russian Research Institute of Control Automation), Industrial Glass Research Institute, Andreyev Acoustics Institute, All-Russian Research Institute of Medicinal and Aromatic Plants, Kartsev Research Institute of Computer Complexes, to mention just a few.
Consumer market and services. The okrug has nearly 4,000 of small-scale retail units, over 1,500 sales outlets, over 600 eating facilities, more than 750 service companies, 11 hotels, 9 marketplaces, 8 malls and 3 weekend markets.
Culture and sports. The Southwestern Administrative District houses 72 cultural institutions, including the State Darwin Museum, Paleontological Museum of the Russian Academy of Sciences, The Bolshoi Moscow State Circus in Vernadsky Prospekt, Sats Moscow State Academic Theatre, as well as over 100 cultural heritage monuments and buildings.
