Eastern Administrative Okrug

Year established. 1991.

Districts. Bogorodskoye, Veshnyaki, Vostochnoye Izmailovo, Vostochny, Golyanovo, Ivanovskoye, Izmailovo, Kosino-Ukhtomsky, Metrogorodok, Novogiryeevo, Novokosino, Perovo, Preobrazhenskoye, Severnoye Izmailovo, Sokolinaya Gora, Sokolniki — 16 districts.

Area. 154.6 square meters (14.4% of the total area of Moscow).

Population. 1,384,000 people (13.2% of the total population of Moscow).

Manufacturing. The okrug currently has more than 94,000 enterprises of all forms of ownership, including more than 120 big and medium-sized companies and 86 research centers. The okrug also has a whole infrastructure including the Council of Industrialists and Entrepreneurs of the Eastern Administrative Okrug, the Municipal Small Business Support Foundation, and the Technopark Vostok non-profit partnership.

Consumer market and services. The okrug is home to 50 big retail centers, as well as 40 “multiservice” firms that provide a variety of services, such as dry-cleaner’s, locksmith’s, shoe repair, mobile phone and jewelry repair, hairdresser, photo printing, etc.

14 Utkonos stores are located in the okrug. Utkonos is a social project created to meet the demands of the Muscovites.

In 2007, more than 2,000 retailers, some 1,000 public service providers, and 840 cafés and restaurants were opened in the administrative okrug, which created an impressive amount of new jobs.

Arts and sports. There are some 90 art institutions in the Eastern administrative okrug, including 55 public libraries (of which 23 a children’s libraries), an affiliate of the State Public Research Library, the Republican Youth Library of the Culture Ministry of Russia, four exhibition halls, the Mimicry and Gesture Theater, the Moscow Drama Theater on Perovskaya, the Moscow Illusion Theater, the Moscow Children’s Shadow Theater, the Zhar-Ptitsa Moscow State Puppet Theater, and the Albatros Puppet Theater.

500 educational institutions are located in the Eastern Administrative Okrug, among which are 19 higher education institutions, 23 non-state educational institutions and one cadet corps.

The Eastern Administrative Okrug boasts unique sports potential for hosting physical and health-improvement activities as well as mass sports events: 19 stadiums, 24 swimming pools, 597 playgrounds, 7 ice rinks, and 4 tennis courts. There are also 45 special sports centers that serve the needs of disabled people.

The okrug has several parks stretching across its territory, i.e. the Perovo Culture and Leisure Park, the Sokolniki Culture and Leisure Park, the Izmailovo Park, as well as the State Ceramics Museum and the 18th century Kuskovo Country Estate.
