Population: 1,090,800 people (10.2% of the total population of Moscow)
Manufacturing. The Western okrug is considered one of Moscow’s most industrially developed, boasting over 42 large manufacturing enterprises, 44 construction organizations, and 50 research and design institutes. Similarly, there are a total of around 80,000 enterprises of various types of ownership operating in the area. The okrug’s industrial enterprises are responsible for 7.2% of the city’s overall industrial output. The dominating industrial sectors include engineering, construction material production, and the food industry.
The key enterprises in the area are the Krunichev State Research and Production Space Center, Russia’s oldest ice-cream producer Ice-Fili, the CampoMos meat processing company, Ochakovo beer and soft drink company, Ochakovo Dairy Plant, Moscow Champagne Winery, Badayevsky brewery, OAO Coca-Cola, MTZ Rubin, Zavod ZBI-10, OAO MTZ Rubin, and Kamvolnoye objedinenie Oktober.
Consumer market and services. Over 2,500 consumer market enterprises operate in the Western Administrative Okrug, including 664 food service companies, 1,184 retail outlets, 712 public service providers, and 15 markets and shopping complexes (shopping centres).
There are also 102 healthcare institutions operating in the Western okrug.
Arts and sports. The Western Administrative Okrug is referred to as "the capital’s lungs." Lawns and vegetation make up 14.4% of the okrug’s territory, and its flower beds represent one half of the total area of all flower beds in Moscow. The okrug also features such nature sites as the Moskvoretsky and Peredelkino parks, the Krylatskiye Kholmy protected landscape area, Sparrow Hills, and the Rublyovo and Meshcherskoye recreational zones. The okrug’s natural complex represents 18% of that of Moscow as a whole.
The Western Administrative Okrug is home to over 370 educational institutions, including Lomonosov Moscow State University, the Russian Academy of Public Service under the President of the Russian Federation, the Academy of National Economy under the Government of the Russian Federation, Moscow State Institute of International Relations (University) (MGIMO), Lomonosov Moscow State Academy of Fine Chemical Technology,Moscow State Institute of Radio-engineering, Electronics and Automation (MIREA),Moscow State Aviation Technological Institute (MATI), Moscow State University of Economics, Statistics and Informatics (MESI), and the Russian Federal Security Service Academy.
Over 150 cultural attractions are located in the Western okrug, including the Battle of Borodino Panorama museum, the State Moscow Defense Museum, the Fili recreational park, the world’s only Kuklachev Cats Theatre, the Gnessin Moscow Children’s Music School, the Pyotr Fomenko Workshop Theatre, the Central Museum of the 1941—1945 Great Patriotic War, and the Nazarov State Music Theatre of Folk Art.
The okrug boasts over 900 fitness and sports facilities, including 10 sports complexes, 6 stadiums, 20 swimming pools, 4 mountain skiing bases, a golf-club, a skating palace.
Two Olympic villages have been built in the okrug: the 1980 Olympic Games Village and the 1998 International Youth Olympic Games Village Complex.
